Journey time monitoring the most meaningful measure of network performance

Origin and Destination matrices provide demand information, input for traffic models and support for multi mode journey options.

The Marksman 87X series of camera systems provides a here-and-now solution to these requirements.

Outstation cameras fixed to gantries or other roadside furniture identify vehicles at key points in the network using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).

Weatherproof Roadside data processing allows data to be transferred to the central location every few minutes, hours or daily, according to data needs.

The Golden River in-station software suite based at the customer’s centre calculates journey time and/or Origin and Destination (OD) matrices as required.

Key Features of Journey Time Monitoring Systems

  • Journey times in realtime
  • “Live” OD matrices
  • validate model predictions
  • Confirm traffic regulation measures
  • Confirm bus lane effectiveness
  • Data for passenger information systems
  • Graphical data presentation

Real-Time OD Matrices

In addition to journey-time matrices, the analysis of a complex motorway network can be studied. The operator might wish to determine the entry and exit routes for different times of the day, or even by vehicle type when used in conjunction with the Marksman 660. In an urban motorway network, the number and routes of one-junction journeys could be monitored by time-of-day. Such information can be used for specific tasks such as optimising diversion routing around roadworks and more generally to provide input to traffic models and forecasts.

Bus Lane Performance

In order to justify bus-lane schemes in terms of “return-on-capital-employed”, measurements need to be made of the relative travel times of buses versus other vehicles. With selective location of cameras the Marksman 800 series is ideal for collecting continuous time-of-day bus lane performance figures. This information can be fed back to central traffic management systems.

Tolling Systems

The introduction of congestion charging in major cities, is likely to introduce major shifts

and distortions in travel routes and journey times. Individual local effects are likely to be

difficult to predict. The Golden River Traffic system allows a before and after study, recording detailed actual journey time and OD information. In this way policy and strategic decisions can be properly justified from an independent, unbiased data-source.
