Weigh in Motion

The enforcement of vehicle weight limits

Heavy vehicles very impose a burden on both the local community, via a misuse of local road weight restrictions and on the road infrastructure itself. There is a accepted relationship between axle load and damage caused to road surfaces. Whilst one of the main factors affecting road and highway damage is the sheer volume of heavy vehicles, trucks with axle loads exceeding legal limits cause a great threat to the maintenance of road surfaces. In addition, overloading be it on one or more axles  or the whole vehicle will also have an adverse affect on road traffic safety due to erratic vehicle handling and potential loss of control.

Local authorities are now working with Trading Standard Officers monitoring axle and wheel loads in addition to gross vehicle weights. Evidence gathered by these authorities is being used to directly prosecute offenders rather than going via Police forces.

Bridge overload protection

Increasing traffic volumes and the use of heavier vehicles have increased the need to protect weak bridges on the road network from overloads either from overloaded vehicles or the effect of too many heavy vehicles on a bridge at any one time.
Golden River’s weigh in motion system is equally suited to bridge overload protection.
