Over the last 10 years the number of cars on our roads has increased by almost 30% and road authorities are struggling to cope with the effects of growing congestion that this causes. Furthermore local legislation such as the Traffic Management Act in the United Kingdom has placed a further burden on these bodies to formulate cost effective and practical ways to tackle traffic management, congestion.
Until recently most local traffic planning has been based around historic or time lapsed flow and speed information. Now this needs to be supplemented with real time information to know where the actual queues are. This information is vital to support immediate actions to change network operations, altering traffic flows and minimising the impact of the problem. This data will also be needed to support authorities medium term plans to alter traffic flows to help them get the most from their road network.
