If the purpose of the headlights on our cars is to illuminate the road ahead and increase road safety, how is it that they’re getting a bad rap lately?

Dazzlingly bright beams and state-of-the-art xenon headlights are being misused and increasingly contributing to road collisions. But who’s to blame?

It’s a question posed by two road sector groups who were so fed up with complaints about being dazzled by excessively bright headlights that they decided to take action.

They’ve set up Lightmare - an Internet-based petition to tackle the problem of improper use of vehicle lights in the day and the hazards posed by high intensity xenon lighting at night.

According to Lightmare, the lights are to blame for countless accidents, especially at night and in rural areas where there’s insufficient or no street lighting. They also argue that the misuse of daytime running lights leads to light pollution and reduces the visibility of cyclists.

Lightmare are looking across the pond to observe how other countries are dealing with the problem. In Austria for example, data from traffic experts helped in the removal of daytime running light regulations.
